I currently own a Dawes Discovery Hybrid bike, its fine enough to commute into London (16 mile round trip). As a Geordie it would be great to do the C2C and finish in Tynemouth, my question is, would I need to spend a few quid on a new bike with more gears to tackle the hills on the C2C?

After 15 years as an economic migrant in London, I need to get back to the joys of cycling up North as I did as a kid.

hi there junior,where abouts in north you from?i live in the tyne valley up towards hexham,not strictley geordie then eh? i would think your dawes would be fine, after all what ever bike you bought and how much you spent it wont pedal itself will it?i remember one time at the top of rookhope incline watchin a bloke wearing sandals and riding an old raleigh with 3 speeds and a bairn in a child seat on the back ride all the way without putting a foot down.we all had to give him a clap when he got to the top, said the bairn egged him on sayin "go on dad nearly there".of course you could spend as much as you can if you fancy shiney new steed ans need excuse to do it.

Thanks for the advice, I'm from Gosforth and hankering to get back up North.

Cycling in London is like a video game, once you've had a bendy bus coming at you.......plus insane men in white vans etc etc, however its great to go past so many people just sat fuming in their cars.

ive been there once, got a taxi past khightsbridge and to harrods,,i was sh**ing myself,and that tube!! i used to work in gosforth a few years back in the secure unit at st nicks,am sure youll know the place.

Yes, I have had the pleasure of being inside the secure Unit, a lad I went to school with worked there (Paul Veitch) and he showed me around during a Charity day circa 1984..... the people who I thought were the inmates were the staff......................

I have a Dawes Discover 201 and a good bike for the price. I use it nowadays for work, shopping and to me Mum's It done a few thousand miles, been to the York Cycle Show fully loaded with camping kit on. It will be going again to York Cycle Show this year in June, only this time I will be at the youth hostel.

If I had to buy another bike for work, then I would get another Discovery 201.

Anyway, getting to the point about the C2C. I would use the 201, no, probs.

Cheers for the advice, the Dawes hasn't let me down at all after 1 years cycling around London. I will treat it to some northern landscapes on the C2C later this year.

I assume the dawes giro wheels would just buckle on the standard C2C route 72 job or are you talking about a more ideal road bike route?

How would a claud butler regent stand up?
