The C2C And Northern Cycle Routes Forum

Hi everyone I'm new to this forum malarky but I'm kind of stuck so I thought I'd give it a go.
I'm planning to cycle From St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay in a couple of weeks, but not on a mountain bike, just a tourer so will only be able to handle light off road riding.
All I can find so far are package deals which I'm not into or mountain bike trails.
Does anyone know of a book, or map of this route.
Or has anyone got any route advice.
I've thought of just buying a map and and guessing it, but we might miss out on some great spots.

Hi Cris. I would pay a visit to the Sustrans website as you'll find both route details plus good maps and advice. You should be able to use most of the Coast to Coast route I imagine, so there is lots of info about this. I've only travelled the latter between Sunderland and Consett, and then only lightly laden so I've used both my heavy hybrid and my Dawes Super Galaxy, but if you are carrying a lot of gear I would recommend that you use 700 x 38 tyres/wheels if your tourer will take them. I have done St Bees to Robin Hoods bay on a land rover run before and it was all done on tarmac so no great tyres needed. I'm sure i have the map somewhere, I'll try and dig it out.

There is a WALK of course between these points, which is the official coast to coast walk, but the CYCLE C2C is a somewhat different route methinks and, as far as I'm aware, the only coast to coast cycle route which is covered by a guide.

I'm planning a double Coast to Coast bike ride in early September and am doing from Stockton on Tees to St. Bees and back over to Robin Hood's Bay.

I've not finalised my route, but have a draft. I'm doing the Hadrian's Cycle-Path, then down to St.Bees, C2C to Keswick, Pooley Bridge, Shap, Orton, Kirkby Stephen, Tan Hill, Reeth, Leyburn, Thirsk, Coxwold (avoiding Sutton Bank ) Helmsley, Hutton le Hole, Rosedale Abbey, Egton Bridge, Ugglebarnby to Robin Hood's Bay.

The given towns and villages are key points and the route inbetween these can vary.

If you want to follow the Coast to Coast route as closely as possible, take a look at Tim Woodcock's - "Wheelwright's Coast to Coast" although best done on a mtb, but the route will give you some good idea's. Don't be fooled in the bridle-way's being dry. because in wet weather, these can be very wet, making cycling on a road bike hard work. Best to use the mtb for upland bridle-way.
