A Sustrans Volunteer ranger has been out along the Wylam Waggonway with a magnetic sweeper and in 2 days has picked up over 1000 tacks - each about 1cm long. The route will be swept on a regular basis until the culprit is caught.
The hand pushed magnetic sweeper is mounted on a 2 wheel trolley and sweeps a path about 1m wide and is proving to be very effective in lifting these tacks out of the track surface.
