Water Stops

Postby Paul Ridley on Mon Apr 27, 2009 1:12 pm

Hello all

How easy is it to top up with water along the route? I appreciate that we can buy water at shops/cafes/card stamping sites etc, but how about access to public water stops/taps along the way generally?

We are starting off with 3 litre water bladders, but want to keep hydrated during our 2 day trip, so any advice on where to fill up would be appreciated.

Cheers.

OK - thanks very much

Any advice would be appreciated as we dont want to spend too much time searching for water away from the trail unless we have to.

Cheers.

I have done the C2C 7 times and don't recall seeing any water taps en-route, only on camp-sites. The only time I needed water was to buy the bottles from shops or cafes. I was never a fan of drinking water, much preferring to drink in pubs  . One idea is ask at the camp-sites along the route, although maybe chargeable or if you are cheeky, ask at any farmhouse.

The only tap I've seen is in Garrigill, if you follow the road route its on the left on a wall just after the pub. Other than that its pubs or Toilets only, I can think of Whinlatter visitors centre (specially designed to be impossible to get your water bladder under), Keswick old railway station, Penrith (?), Hartside Cafe, Garrigill (as above), Nenthead Public toilets (grotty last time there), Parkhead Station....... never looked after that. Pubs you may need to buy a drink as they can get annoyed if you arnt a customer, but you pass several in the villages along the way.

3L of water is quite a lot. I carry two 0.75L containers which usually does me a full day in northern england unless you get a very hot day. Like the others I just fill these in pubs or cafes on route (where I'd take on more liquid in one form or another). I find most people are willing to fill bottles even if the toilets aren't possible. I've never used a bladder sac though.
