Cows

Postby Rewfromthegill on Sun Jul 06, 2008 7:44 pm

Hi,

I fancy doing the Hadrians Way later this year. Does the route go through any cows fields? I seem to be a magnate for them - been chased that many times it isn't funny!

Any tips on how to deal with them?

I've never done Hadrian's Cycle Route, but I've walked the Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk and lots of Cows there. Just ignore them, just curious creatures that is all.

Hadrians Cycleway goes through some fields near Sellafield and there are small cattle grids between the fields - fields usually contain sheep but you can't miss them they glow in the dark !!
There are cows on the Solway marshes but they stay clear of the road usually.
Otherwise you are OK all the way to the finish.

Thanks for the replies.

I suppose if you come across them on a main cycle route they must be used to seeing people on bikes.

My first unsettling experience was being chased on my bike by a Hereford bull and about 20 heifers along a bridle path near to Doddington. Since then, reading a number of articles about walkers being crushed to death by cattle and having a few other close encounters has fuelled my paranoia!
