Edmundbyers Youth Hostel as some canny history about it.
The hostel used to be a Inn called "Low House" and built about 1600, 66 years before the dreaded Plague came in. The Inn later became a farm, later providing accommodation and teas before becoming a hostel in 1935-6, well before the C2C was heard of and probably had steam trains running along on the Waskerley Way.
There say the hostel has a ghost, who was a Londoner who died from exposure while searching the fells for his girl-friend, still haunts the fell and hostel.
Also, if it had not been for the C2C being so popular. Edmundbyers Hostel was supposedly been on the hit-list and that was before the Foot and Mouth.

The same success story was the near closing down of "Allenhead's Post Office" Again C2C saved the day and well done to all the cyclists using it, even if it is just a lousy Mars Bar.
Yes, the C2C has come a long way since then.
What fun...cycling is

Looks like an interesting route. I have been looking at it as I plan to ride back home to west Cumbria after the c2c Whitehaven - Tynemouth.
I have just started looking but was planning on using most of, or a mix of either the rievers route or hadrians cycleway. I will also be on a road bike (super galaxy).

I would of like to of done the Reiver's or Hadrian's Wall route, then the C2C back to the East coast. But I'm bit short on time, with holidays starting on Sunday., then getting to the York for the Cycle show on Friday. I want to get a 7:00am start for Kirkby Stephen, then I can relax.
I was going to do the trip on a road-bike, but decided on the trekking bike.

| I've been looking at the maps (again) and have decided to alter the plan a bit, it's looking like like this.
Day 1. Stockton - Darlington - Barnard Castle - Sleigholme Moor - Tan Hill - Barras - Kirkby Stephen - Newbiggin on Lune.
Day 2. Newbiggin on Lune - Tebay - Beck Foot - Kendal - Burneside - Windermere - Ambleside - Wrynose Pass - Hardknott Pass - Eskdale/Boot.
Day 3. Eskdale/Boot - Santon Bridge - Gosforth - Seascale - Beckernet - St. Bees - Cleator Moor - C2C to Little Blencow.
Day 4 & 5. C2C route to Newcastle upon Tyne.
A nice little round tour, not sure about Wrynose & Hardknott Passes. But it's always been my dream to do them, now is my chance.

A nice route agileman.
How far do you think day 1 & 2 are? It looks like a good route for me to get home from the c2c.
