Hi All

Sorry if this has been posted before - newbie to posting and all that Embarassed

Planning to do the above in two weeks time - done a few long distance routes before; Devon Coast to Coast, C2C, Hadrians Wall, LEJOG - so not a newbie in that sense Very Happy

Don't fancy slogging along the road sections (which I believe there's alot) on knobblies and was wondering if slicks are an option? How rough/muddy is it round Kielder?

I do alot of XC riding so used to rough terrain etc albeit on knobblies.

What do you reckon?

Hi, Three of us did it on slicks about 3 years ago, we really regretted it, I've also done c2c, Hadrians & Le Jog & ride forestry tracks regularly but some parts of the Reivers were all bar impassable, if you really want to use slicks get a map & go via the road in the Keilder area & also take care from Stamfordham to the coast, some of the paths were on very rough coal mine waste or very soft sand, not sure if thats still true now.

Thanks for the advice - not really what I wanted to hear though!

Deep down I knew I was kidding myself with the slick option and I'd have to go with knobblies - just hard work on the road. Sad

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I've done the Reiver's about 10 years ago on a cheap steel mtb, camping it and managed ok. But I did it in June and had a heavy thunderstorm just before Bellingham. Anyway enough of that, getting back to the real point.

TYRES!

What I would suggest is not slicks, but semi slicks. This enables you use both off/on road and there is some good tyres on the market. I think the Reiver's is mainly on tarmac and about a third is off-road, being roughtracks. But there is alternative on-road as a option.

Hi Agileman

Yeah good point - hadn't really thought about semis.

My only reservation with them is that they have no central tread (hence being semi!) and that doesn't allow for good control in the mud especially on the front. Are there any fast off road descents that would require a such a beast on the route?

Think maybe I'll use my lightweight summer XC tyres and see how I get on.
