Hi Mick,

There are shorter routes from one coast to the other - but the C2C route is a remarkable journey that takes in some of the country's finest scenery, including some serious climbs, yet makes them accessible to just about anyone and everyone.

My suggestions to help make the C2C do-able in a day hopefully do not compromise the route, but simply bring one of cyclings greatest challenges within the reach of more people.

Yep, see your point. Humbled I am.

I see the C2C journey as part of my Grand Tour I'm planning for next year. It'll take 5/6 days just to get from here to one side or another of C2C, plus I want to get to N Scotland, and then back home again!

Time/distance is of the essence as much as anything else.

I do think that it would be a shame to miss the C2C proper for the sake of a day or two - if you're up here anyway.

But if you're passing near Durham on whatever route you do decide on, give me a shout if you fancy a few miles together.

If thats the case (and providing you don't change your mind!) try the W2W Whitby option www.cyclingw2w.info for details and when you get through the Lune Gorge head north to penrith via Tebay, Orton, Kings Meaburn and Cliburn and at penrith pick up the C2C to Workington - backwards so to speak!

We seem to be determined that you will cycle the C2C (or some of it at least) don't we?

Interesting and good advice from Milessinclair, I did it in just under 11 hours this June setting off from Workington at 6am and did most of what you are advising apart from very little on the A66 it was harder but main roads do scare me a little.

I am 57 but rather fit as I am a club cyclist who is in his first year of road racing.

I really enjoy the C2C as I do it every year with my mate Dave, it helps when you don't have to navigate or look at a route map.

I was backed up by my partner and had about 2 hours of stops in total, I was very tired at the end but could not sleep as I was driven back to York as I felt so elated.

If your thinking of trying, go on give it a go, but do ensure you at least do some training first, keep well hydrated and eat regularly even if you don't feel hungry.[/list]

1 Day sounds amazing - I will do it - we done the C2C last year over 4 days (we had the partners with us).

How do you manage Garrigill - that was the hardest part for all of us?
