ive always wanted to travel by train on the carlisle to settle line ,thinking of combining this in summer with a 2 day ride back on quiet roads,im rough guesstermatin thats about 150 miles back home anyone ride in that area?that ribblehead viaduct is an amazing piece of engineering,worth it just to see that.

On a more serious note, john. The Yorkshire Dales is one of the best areas I've cycled in and good cycling too. The Ribblehead Via-Duct is well worth seeing and that would be a good idea to get the train to Settle and cycle back to Newcastle upon Tyne.

I can suggest to you, a route of 110 miles with a overnight stop at Dufton Youth Hostel, this is about the 50 mile mark. So you probably may have to Bed and Breakfast in Settle.

Settle- Horton in Ribblesdale - Ribblehead - Cowgill - Garsdale Head - Mallerstang Common - Kirkby Stephen - Hilton - Dufton - Melmerby - A686 - Alston - Hayton Bridge - Hadrian's Wall Route to Newcastle.

Might even do it myself.

There is another Sustrans Route called "Pennine Cycleway" this is route 68 and runs from Derby to Berwick upon Tweed and that is a nice ride.

Although it misses out Horton in Ribblesdale, you could still see the Ribble Head Via-Duct and re:join the PCW using the B6255 back to Ingleton and so onto Haltwhistle to link up with the Hadrian's Wall route.

But to go under the Ribble Head Via-Duct is a experience is to be had for good cycle tourist and the only way is the Horton in Ribblesdale. Horton in Ribbledale has the Pen-y-Ghent cafe that serves pint mugs of Tea or Coffee.

Urged by your idea on doing from Settle back to Newcastle, I went back onto Memory-Map. I was looking for a idea for June holidays in the region of 200 miles and enough time to get back for the York Cycle Show on Friday.

I came up with this route, cycling from Stockton on Tees to Darlington, Catterick Bridge, Masham, Lofthouse, Patley Bridge, Grassington, Gargrave, Settle, Horton in Ribblesdale, Cowgill, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby in Westmorland, Melmerby, Alston, B6277, Middleton in Teesdale and back to Stockton on Tees.

I've plotted the route on the Memory-Map properly and the ascent is 7343' with descent of 7333'. 199 miles, which will make a nice 4 day ride.

so how do you end up 10foot higher up than when you started?
