My tips

Don't carry more stuff than you need. If you're travelling without backup, take the minimum amount of clothing & equipment, it will make a big difference on the many hills.
If you're booking accommodation beforehand ask about bike storage & security, you may not need to carry a heavy bike lock with you
Post laundry home if you get chance, saves carrying it up hills.
Have a trial run with you bike loaded up, full panniers etc. Get a feel for what it will be like on the ride.

As much a mental challenge as a physical challenge at times.

Train properly beforehand (including hill work).
Take a map.
Pray for good weather.
Stay on-road at Hartside.
Go off-road at Rookhope.
Eat and drink plenty through the day.
Enjoy the downhills.
Take lots of photographs.
Talk to people you meet along the way.
Beware of glass and other hazards from Consett onwards.
Enjoy the experience.

Just my two pennies worth........
