My son decided to do the C2C as a way of saying thank you to the Alzheimers Society for all the help they gave me, while at the same time raising money for our local branch, after I had been diagnosed with a form of Alzheimers Disease, Lewy Body Dementia.
As he had no one to go with him he asked if I would go along with him as a way of raising awareness of this illness, which I agreed to without thinking. I had been a cyclist until I was diagnosed in 2003 and then I kept falling off due to the illness. But since christmas I have been back to cycling again which is all down to getting an early diagnosis and treatment which seems to have stopped the illness getting worse. I don't know how long I have got with this medication, but last week-end we did the Coast to Coast and I really enjoyed the experience, even though for me it was extremely hard. I do not think any type of continous training can prepare you for this route.
But I think what made it even better was the way that everyone has a good time and mix together. These people are an example to the rest of society as everyone was so helpful and cheerful.
Many thanks to all who were there and kept me going.
If I am still up to it I would like to try another route next year, as this is keeping all the stiffness away which can be horrific with this illness .
